Omar Aceviz Serving Country and Community

Omar Aceviz grew up in Hampton, Illinois, and graduated from United Township High School in 2004.

Following high school, Omar enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as a hospital corpsman at naval hospitals and with forward-deploying units. During his military service, he was stationed with the United States Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and deployed to Iraq in 2009 during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Advancing a Career in Healthcare

After transitioning from active duty to civilian life and continuing his service in the Navy Reserves, Omar pursued a career in nursing and healthcare.

He enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program at Black Hawk College, graduating in 2015 before continuing his education at University of Illinois Chicago.

In 2017, Omar earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing and was commissioned as a naval officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve Nurse Corps. He later completed a master’s degree in nursing at University of St. Francis in 2022.

Today, Omar serves as a family nurse practitioner for the Genesis Health System / MercyOne regional healthcare system while continuing his military service as a lieutenant in the Navy Reserves.

A Lifelong Commitment to Learning and Service

Omar credits Black Hawk College with helping shape both his professional path and his passion for healthcare.

“The nursing program at Black Hawk College was rigorous and demanding, both physically and mentally, but allowed the students access to the vast knowledge of the professors from many different health care backgrounds and experiences,” says Omar. “I owe my time at Black Hawk College for shaping me into the health care professional I am today.”

Through military service, healthcare leadership, and continued dedication to learning, Omar exemplifies the impact of service-driven leadership and lifelong education.
