Your Legacy. Their Opportunity.

Planned giving offers a meaningful way to support education and create a lasting legacy for future generations. Your gift can open classroom doors for tomorrow’s innovators and help transform lives for years to come. Through financial or estate planning, individuals, families, and organizations can make future gifts that strengthen educational opportunities and may also provide valuable tax and financial benefits.

How Planned Giving Can Help

Planned gifts can provide financial benefits for you or your loved ones, may qualify for charitable tax advantages, and allow you to leave a legacy that supports education for generations. Because every individual’s financial situation is unique, donors are encouraged to consult with their attorney, financial advisor, or tax professional when considering planned giving options.

Flexible Ways to Give

There are many ways to include charitable giving in your financial planning. Gifts may be made through wills, beneficiary designations, retirement accounts, life insurance policies, charitable trusts, gift annuities, or other financial arrangements. Donors can choose an approach that aligns with their personal, financial, and philanthropic goals.

In addition to financial gifts, the Foundation may consider gifts-in-kind, including equipment, materials, or services that support Black Hawk College's mission and needs.

Honoring Someone Special

Tributes and memorial gifts offer a meaningful way to honor or remember someone whose life or influence deserves recognition. These gifts celebrate the legacy of loved ones, mentors, colleagues, or community leaders while helping create opportunities for future students. With donor permission, tribute and memorial gifts may also be recognized through Foundation publications or online acknowledgments.

Bequests and Estate Gifts

Including a charitable gift in your will or estate plan is one of the most common and flexible ways to support education. Bequests allow donors to make a meaningful future gift while maintaining full control of their assets during their lifetime.

Retirement plans, IRAs, life insurance policies, and annuities can also support charitable causes through simple beneficiary designation forms. These assets are transferred according to beneficiary designations rather than the terms of a will, making them flexible and an easy way to leave a future gift. Beneficiary designations are also revocable and can be updated if circumstances or plans change.

Because retirement accounts and annuities often carry significant tax implications when transferred to heirs, directing these assets to a charitable organization can be a tax-efficient way to maximize support for both your loved ones and the causes you value most. For example, leaving an IRA to the Foundation may help avoid income taxes that heirs could otherwise owe.

Life-Income Gifts

Charitable gift annuities offer the opportunity to make a meaningful gift while receiving income payments for life or for a specified period. These arrangements can offer immediate charitable tax benefits and dependable income, while ultimately supporting scholarships and educational opportunities for future students.

Because charitable gift annuities are irrevocable arrangements, donors are encouraged to carefully review their options with professional advisors.

Trust-Based Giving Options

Charitable remainder trusts allow donors to make a substantial future gift while continuing to receive income for themselves or other beneficiaries during their lifetime. At the conclusion of the trust term, the remaining assets support the Black Hawk College Foundation and its mission.

Charitable lead trusts provide support to the Foundation either immediately or over a designated period of time, after which the remaining trust assets are transferred to family members or other designated heirs. These trusts can help donors balance charitable goals with long-term family financial planning.
