Mark Drake

Mark Drake dedicated his career to creating hope, opportunity, and support for young people throughout the Quad Cities. Through decades of compassionate leadership and vision, he helped build programs and spaces that continue to positively impact thousands of children, teens, and families.

Mark Drake Building a Foundation for Service

Mark Drake studied law enforcement at Black Hawk College, earning an Associate of Applied Science degree in 1982. He continued his education at Illinois State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 1984 and a master’s degree in counseling in 1986.

Soon after completing his education, Mark began what would become a 37-year career leading Youth Hope, formerly known as the Christian Friendliness Association.

When Mark joined the organization, Youth Hope operated with a modest annual budget of $74,000 and a small staff consisting of two part-time and two full-time employees. Under his leadership, the organization expanded dramatically, growing into a nonprofit with an annual operating budget exceeding $2 million.

Creating Safe Places for Young People

Throughout his career, Mark remained focused on providing safe, supportive environments where at-risk youth could find encouragement, mentorship, and opportunity.

He helped establish youth centers in both Rock Island and Moline, creating spaces where thousands of children and teens have been able to build leadership and relationship skills, receive support and guidance, and experience hope and belonging.

One of Mark’s most significant accomplishments was the creation of Camp Summit in New Windsor, Illinois. Situated on 60 acres, Camp Summit offers residential summer camps and weekend retreats that give young people opportunities to connect with nature, build confidence, and experience activities many had never encountered before.

Since opening in 1998, Camp Summit has served more than 9,000 students through experiences including canoeing, fishing, ziplining, campfires, and outdoor recreation. The camp grew from Mark’s vision and determination to expand opportunities for youth beyond the challenges of everyday life.

Leaving a Lasting Legacy

Mark’s commitment to supporting young people extended beyond programming alone. He established a college scholarship fund for students involved in Youth Hope programs and helped create four endowments to ensure the long-term sustainability of Youth Hope’s mission throughout the Quad Cities region.

He also launched Cre8 Studios, encouraging young people to explore creativity and pursue opportunities in the arts.

Through his leadership, compassion, and unwavering dedication to youth, Mark helped create a legacy of hope that continues to impact generations of young people and families across the community.
