Jazmin Newton Pursuing Education and a Dream of Law

She later completed bachelor’s degrees in psychology and sociology at University of Iowa in 2010 while continuing to pursue her longtime dream of becoming an attorney.

Just three weeks after giving birth to her second son, Jazmin began law school at Northern Illinois University. Commuting daily from Iowa to DeKalb while raising two children, she successfully balanced the demands of family life and legal studies, graduating cum laude in May 2013.

Leadership in Law and Advocacy

During law school, Jazmin became actively involved in numerous student organizations and leadership opportunities. She participated in the Women’s Law Caucus, the Latina/o Law Student Association, the Black Law Student Association, the Public Interest Law Society, and the Student Bar Association.

She also served as attorney general for the National Latina/o Law Student Association in 2012 and 2013 and competed in multiple moot court competitions. In 2012, her team advanced to the quarterfinals of a national moot court competition and earned recognition for Best Respondent’s Brief.

Today, Jazmin’s primary area of practice is family law. She is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association, the Iowa State Bar Association, the Scott County Bar Association, and the Rock Island County Bar Association.

Committed to Civic Engagement and Community Service

In addition to her legal career, Jazmin has remained deeply involved in nonprofit organizations and civic leadership throughout the region.

She has participated in political and community initiatives at the local, state, and national levels and believes strongly in the importance of civic engagement and representative government.

In 2019, Jazmin served as Latinx Caucus chair for Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign. In 2023, she was elected alderman at-large for the city of Davenport, continuing her commitment to public service and community leadership.
