Dougal Nelson

Dougal’s career reflects a lifelong commitment to growth, leadership, and community impact. From working in manufacturing while pursuing his education to leading one of the region’s most influential youth organizations, his journey demonstrates the power of perseverance and service.

Dougal Nelson A Path Built Through Hard Work and Education

Dougal Nelson grew up in the Quad Cities and graduated from United Township High School in 1978. After high school, he worked primarily in the manufacturing sector while attending Black Hawk College intermittently over several years.

In spring 1995, Dougal returned to Black Hawk College full-time, earning his associate degree before transferring to Western Illinois University, where he completed a bachelor’s degree in business management with honors in 1998.

From Business Leadership to Community Impact

Dougal began his professional career with Isabel Bloom, eventually serving as vice president of sales and marketing. During this time, he discovered a passion for community engagement and nonprofit leadership that would shape the next chapter of his career.

In 2011, Dougal transitioned into the nonprofit sector, first working with the American Red Cross and later with Habitat for Humanity International.

In 2016, Junior Achievement of the Heartland recruited Dougal to serve as vice president of development. Just one year later, he was named president and chief executive officer, leading the organization through a period of significant growth and innovation until his retirement in October 2025.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Under Dougal’s leadership, Junior Achievement expanded its reach to provide experiential learning opportunities to more than 50,000 students annually. In recognition of his leadership and impact, he received the Karl Flemke Pioneer Achievement Award from Junior Achievement USA in 2022.

One of the defining accomplishments of his tenure came in October 2024 with the opening of the $3.25 million Free Enterprise Foundation Junior Achievement Inspiration Center. Home to JA BizTown and JA Finance Park, the center provides thousands of students each year with hands-on experiences in financial literacy, career readiness, and economic mobility.

Beyond his professional work, Dougal has remained deeply involved in civic and community organizations throughout the Quad Cities. He continues volunteering in classrooms for Junior Achievement and has served in leadership roles with local Rotary organizations, including as past president of the Rotary International Moline Rotary Club. He is currently active with the Twin Rivers Rotary Club and the Breakfast Optimist Club, continuing his lifelong dedication to community service.
